Minnesota ranks 1st in the nation for long-term care. With the right modifications and community support, you can maintain your independence safely at home.

Room-by-Room Safety Checklist

Bathroom (Highest Risk)
  • Install grab bars by toilet and shower.
  • Add non-slip mats inside and outside the tub.
  • Consider a walk-in tub or curbless shower.
Kitchen & Living
  • Swap round knobs for lever-style handles.
  • Install pull-out shelving in lower cabinets.
  • Ensure all paths are clear of rugs and cords.
Entryways
  • Add bright lighting at all exterior doors.
  • Install ramps if stairs are a barrier.
  • Use smart locks for easy caregiver access.
Technology
  • Wearable Emergency Response (PERS).
  • Voice-activated lighting for nighttime.
  • Smart thermostats for easy adjustment.

How to Pay for Home Modifications

Medicare typically does not cover structural changes like ramps or grab bars. Use these Minnesota programs instead:

Program What it Covers Best For...
Elderly Waiver (EW) "Environmental Accessibility Adaptations" Those eligible for Medical Assistance.
Alternative Care (AC) Ramps, grab bars, and home-based services. Those with low assets who don't yet qualify for MA.
State Waivers Emergency Response Systems (PERS). Prevention of falls and medical crises.

Transportation & Community Support

Staying independent means staying mobile. Minnesota offers several unique transportation and housing models:

  • Metro Mobility: Door-to-door service for Twin Cities residents.
  • Volunteer Driver Coalition: Connects rural residents with community drivers.
  • Arrowhead Transit: Essential for medical travel in Greater Minnesota.
  • Senior Housing Co-ops: A middle path between solo living and a facility (popular in Golden Valley).
  • "Village" Models: Neighbors pooling resources for yard work, cooking, and driving.

Pro-Tip: Schedule regular assessments. As your mobility changes, your modifications should too. Planning today ensures home remains your safest place tomorrow.
